Today... today.. today.... first day of April

Back in my old days, people would care of the date 1st April. They tend to pull naughty prank on each other, tell lies that could make a girl cry and all that stuffs that I find pretty ridiculous if you put it in normal sense, 'Why would anyone fool another on this very day?' Seriously, where did the notion come from?
Can someone tell me?

However, now, things changed. Pranks are like.. a childish act to be done and people won't get cheated easily, we are more intelligent! I don't know you guys but me, I'm frigid. Lies, cheats and pranks cannot penetrate my fortress of the mind. For I utilise them as my everyday routine. Croc style!
